Review: Watermelon and Peach Chews by Smokiez

1

There are more than a few products I’ve had in other legal states that I would love to see in Illinois. Smokiez gummies have been on that list for a while now. I first sampled the chews as a budtender in Missouri, and I’ve been hoping to see the giant brand bring its mass-market style snack to Illinois dispensaries. Recently, I found the brand’s two new drops, Watermelon and Peach, at Consume Marion.

Smokiez’ fruit chews come as ten count bags of gummies with 10mg of THC per gummy for a total of 100mg per package. The ingredients in the Watermelon are beet sugar, corn syrup, pectin, sucrose, citric acid, sodium citrate, natural and artificial flavors, FD&C Red 40, Red 3, soy lecithin, and cannabis distillate. The ingredients in the Peach are the same with the addition of Yellow 6, and cannabis terpenes.

Just at a centimeter wider in circumference than a quarter and just over a quarter-inch thick, each gummy had some weight in the hand. Bright translucent pink for watermelon and orange for peach, each chew was coated in a rough sugar but dry on the surface without the addition. Dense, these gummies had a stiff chew that stuck to the tooth at first but broke up quickly after that.

Both flavors delivered strong scents inside the bag. The Watermelon was an exact match for watermelon Jolly Ranchers with its sharply sweet nose. The Peach was a toned down version of peach-rings candy and lacked the sharp artificial sweetness of the watermelon. Both flavors carried less intense versions of the artificial candy aromas, leaning more into the sugary sweetness with the flavor profiles coming in later and lighter at the finish. There was only a hint of distillate bitterness, but it disappeared quickly with the rest of the flavor.

Smokiez labels the Watermelon as hybrid and the Peach as sativa, but I found the effect profiles to be very similar. A floating sensation accompanied by intermittent waves of tingles became noticeable by the 35-minute mark. Calm and collected, my mood was boosted by the simple removal of my background worries, and I was able to focus on the moment more clearly. After the intensity of the initial physicality, a lighter body pain release, and muscle relaxation remained in place for a couple hours. Overall, I enjoyed the super accessible candy flavor, texture, and straightforward effects as an anytime edible.
