Review: Hybrid Kief by Paul Bunyan
One of the cannabis byproducts that held an outsized value in the days before legalization was kief. The dry sifted powder may have lost some of its draw in a world of live resins and rosins, but a lot of old school consumers still appreciate it. Paul Bunyan is appealing to these customers with the label’s new one-gram Hybrid Kief offering. I recently stopped in to Consume Marion and picked up a gram to review.
Paul Bunyan Hybrid Kief is a one-gram blended strain kief that tested at 1.3%THC, 31.48% THCa, and 33.83% total cannabinoids.
Loosely packed, the olive-green powder filled the glass container to the top. A touch revealed a feathery softness but a static cling effect made the kief easy to manipulate and dose out with a dab tool. A 30x magnification revealed a 4:1 ratio of plant matter to trichome pieces with tiny pieces of orange hair and sugar leaf revealing themselves under the scope.
A roasted-herbal aroma with notes of thyme, sage, aged tobacco, cedar, and hot hay revealed itself upon a deep inhale. A bit of ingenuity and an old hash pipe allowed for a few hits of the kief by itself, revealing an earthy, hashy flavor that honed in on the aged tobacco and cedar notes. Mixed into a bowl or joint though, the kief flavor receded into the background, matting the other product as the star.
Kiefs natural place in the cannabis ecosystem is as a plus up, a small potency boost for the joint or bowl it’s added to. Similar to the flavor, the kief seemed to blend into the effect profile of whatever it was added to, leaving me a bit more spaced out and tired when added to indica flower and enhancing the headchange and creative boost I found in sativas. On its own, the kief induced a dazed headspace that derailed my train of thought and a tingling pressure that eventually left me feeling tired on the tail end.
