Review: Mint Chill Cups by SweetBuzz

Consumer’s value familiarity. That’s why many edibles are inspired by classic candies we all know and love. This can be a double-edged sword for many brands as it creates some “big shoes to fill” for taste and quality. Craft infuser SweetBuzz has been beating the classics in my book. I was excited to pick up the brand’s Mint Chill Cups for my next review. News Joint Events is set to host SweetBuzz as one of two-dozen craft brands offering samples at the Illinois Craft Showcase from 12-7 p.m. Sept. 7 at Molly’s Joint.

SweetBuzz Mint Chill Cups come as 10 individually wrapped mint-crème-filled chocolate cups with 10mg of THC per piece. The ingredients were dark chocolatey coating (sugar, vegetable oil (palm kernel oil and hydrogenated palm kernel oil), cocoa powder (processed with alkali), corn syrup, butter, soy lecithin (an emulsifier), whey powder (milk), corn starch, peppermint oil, THC extract and salt.

From the outside, the individually wrapped candies were simple ridged edge chocolate cups just an inch across at the widest part. The exterior was a fudgy chocolate that began to melt after a short time in my hands. The interior was a thick white-mint creme reminiscent of the classic York Peppermint Patty.  The combination of the two created a smooth, creamy melt-in-your-mouth effect on the mouthfeel.

The heavy scent of fresh mint hit my nose as soon as I opened the bag. The palate was very similar. The sweet mint dominated the palate with hints of the chocolate appearing more near the finish but never becoming heavy. The mint tone, while strong, was balanced well with the overall sweetness making for a big punch to the taste buds that cleared the palate rather quickly.

The Mint Chill Cup’s fast-acting THC took only half an hour to reach its peak, unlocking a peaceful headspace and optimistic mood and tamping down my base-level anxiety in the process. Muscle relaxing pressure was first detected in my head and neck and eventually expanded to the rest of my body, especially on multi-cup higher doses. The entire experience was done by the 90-minute mark without any aftereffects. Overall, the Mint Chill Cups were another high-quality candy that beat its inspiration on flavor while delivering a consistent and predictable experience.
