Local township considers moratorium on cannabis businesses

BUTLER TWP., Ohio (WDTN) — Butler Township’s Board of Trustees is considering a marijuana moratorium.

The resolution underwent its first reading at a Trustees meeting Tuesday night.

Butler Twp. proposed a year-long moratorium, temporarily banning recreational marijuana businesses from operating in the township.

Trustees say they want to ensure the selling and distribution are handled as carefully as possible, and the moratorium would give them more time to prepare.

“For us, it’s just making sure that as we figure this out that it’s safe for our residents and safe for the community as well,” said Bryson Jackson, Butler Twp. Trustee President.

The proposed moratorium will be revisited at the next meeting.

Ohioans voted to legalize recreational marijuana last November. The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control will open initial applications for non-medical licenses on June 7. It has until Sept. 7 to provide growers and sellers with a legal framework to operate within.
